Keep It Simple: Three Tips for Selling Your Campaign with Style

Hey, do you remember the Stop Doing Those Unhealthy Things in Life and Start Living the Best and Healthiest That You Can charity wristbands campaign? Of course not. Because we literally just made that up.

When it comes to implementing your wristband campaign – or, for that matter, any sort of campaign designed to capture the public imagination – there are a few rules in place. But top of that list is keeping it simple. That totally made-up campaign above, there’s so many things wrong with it, that you can use it as a tutorial about how not to market yours. Which is precisely what we’re going to do now!

Size Matters

Our phoney campaign has a whopping seventeen letters. It’s as succinct as the Lord of the Rings trilogy extended editions. So it’s not going to look awesome on a wristband, for starters. And you’re not going to remember it. In fact, we just made it up, and even we can’t remember the entire slogan. Not being remembered is a major sin in the events and campaigns world – after all, that’s the whole point! Bear in mind the ever-comforting Rule of 3, or failing that, alliterate. ‘Cause, hey, English is one of the most adaptive languages in the world, soaking up words like a sponge in a bathtub.

Laser (Un)Focussed

So, what’s the Stop Doing Those Unhealthy Things in Life and Start Living the Best and Healthiest That You Can all about? No idea. Something about being healthy – but… How? Why? Who’s it targeting? All of these are pretty important factors when launching any sort of campaign – whether it’s for charity or to raise brand awareness. We know what the Help for Heroes campaign is all about; it’s right there in the title. That focus can separate success from failure.

…And Action!

One of the biggest reasons our fictional campaign will never work is that it’s a bit of a stick, whereas people prefer the carrot. There’s no call to action. It’s a demand, not an encouragement – and plenty of folks hate being told what to do. Look at other successful silicone wristband campaigns. Make Poverty History, Let’s Beat Cancer Sooner, Beat Bullying. Those calls to action work so much better than the Orwellian dictatorship that is Stop Doing Those Unhealthy Things in Life and Start Living the Best and Healthiest That You Can.
